Let’s Go Streaking!

Let’s Go Streaking!

Challenges, Competitions, Exercise Deep Dive, Exercise Ideas, Making Change
Recently, I embarked on a different kind of streaking adventure – one that involves putting on a bunch of extra clothes as opposed to the other. Inspired by an Instagram challenge, I joined a group on Strava (a fitness tracker/social media app, for the uninitiated) to run every day in December. The mission? Simple: hit at least one mile daily. Never having attempted a run streak before, I saw it as an intriguing test. There’s a lot to gain from such a commitment: consistency, discipline, and a blend of mental and physical challenge. Plus, it’s a real test of daily recovery when it’s an exercise streak. Week One: Dodging the ‘Too Busy’ Bullet My biggest fear initially was actually just getting busy and forgetting to go. There were a couple…

Is Something Actually Better than Nothing??

Challenges, Exercise Deep Dive, Exercise Ideas, Making Change
A common question I get asked or see online is some variation of, “I’m super busy with work/kids/sports/other obligations…So I don’t have a lot of time to workout.  How can I work on my fitness without much time?”It’s a completely valid question and one that, I too, struggle with sometimes.  Life gets in the way of our best laid plans and the first thing you have to do is respect that.  Give some credit to the physical and mental energy these other tasks and challenges take from you and don’t try to ‘power through’ it so much.  I recently was discussing this with a client and they were afraid that with all that was going on, making the progress they desired seemed pointless since they couldn’t devote the full time to…

Thoughts on Beet Juice for performance

Challenges, Veggie of the Month
Jason's thought after trying out Beet juice to help with athletic performance.... Juicing itself is a pretty well documented and solid idea when it comes to getting a strong nutrient balance into our bodies.  As a juice-able food source, beets aren't too bad of a choice.  It's a sweet vegetable and generally tastes similar to doing carrots although a little more so in terms of sweet-ness.  To offset a little with some tangy citrus flavor, Hillary added an orange.   It was proposed by the experts that one should consume the beet juice 2 hours before a workout.   Workout number 1 - I drank the juice mid morning as I was going running later.  At that point in the day I had not eaten since breakfast about 2.5 hours earlier.  On…

30 DAY WATER CHALLENGE

Challenges, FitNews
So, I think most people have heard that in order to be “properly hydrated” one needs to intake a much larger amount of water than many of us actually consume.  It is presumed by many in the fitness profession that most people, in addition to being sedentary far too often, exist in a state of chronic dehydration.  The idea is that this lack of proper hydration makes all processes within the body more difficult.  Nutrients and chemicals generally require a specific dilution inside our tissues and since we are mostly made of water, these become out of balance.   Conversely, waste products and toxins are more difficult to process out of the body and can cause their own special kind of havoc to our systems.  Basically, water is good and you…

GOAL SETTING: Next Steps

Challenges, Goal Setting, How To
As promised here is your monthly check in to see how those New Year’s resolutions are going. Did you stick with your one big goal for the month? Add others ones in? Or totally fall of the wagon?  If you stuck with it for the whole 30 days good job! Now it is time to look to what is the next goal for you this month. Is it to stay with what you are doing? Or move it the next level? Add 10 minutes to that morning walk or focusing on eating vegetables at every meal? For those of you that fell off the wagon that is ok! You are not alone. Trust me! However, I would suggest looking at if that goal is really important to you. Does…
